What is a Labragotto?

You are probably wondering what a Labragotto is and why we are breeding them.

The Labrador Retriever is a relatively well known dog breed – one of the classic family dogs.  They are known for their traits of being good with family, young children and other dogs and animals. They are easy to train, playful and love to fetch.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a dog breed that is rare in the US and not broadly known here. This breed has been specially bred in Italy to hunt truffles, and is the only breed in the world that is specialized in this type of search-and-find skills. It has little to no hunting instinct, which means that it is not distracted by game while hunting truffles. It also means that they are able to focus better than most other dog breeds, which has made them very easy to train and not easily startled. They are known for being eager to please, smart and undemanding.  Lagotti are affectionate and loyal, making it easy to form close bonds with its owner and family.

I have been asked several times if the Labragotto is related to the Labradoodle. Well, the answer is yes, but not in the way that one would think. The Labragotto is a Labrador and a Lagotto Romagnolo, whereas a Labradoodle is a Labrador with a Poodle.

History of the Poodle: The Lagotto Romagnolo is an old breed, documented to go back several hundred years. Amongst other breeds, the Poodle is a descendant of the Lagotto Romagnolo. The Lagotto’s coat is one of the main genetic traits that has been passed on to the Poodle.  This is the curly, non-shedding coat which is hypoallergenic and allows those who have allergies to dogs to be able to enjoy these canine friends. So the coat of the Lagotto is where the Poodle’s coat came from. This is one of the most important features in both the Labragotto, and the Labradoodle. In taking the Labradoodle back to its roots, we introduce: The Labragotto!

We hand-pick the sire and dam for our litters from a large selection, specifically to get a family dog that is loving, friendly, easy to train, calm, patient, independent and smart.

Our dam is calm, eager to please, patient, smart and easy to train.

The sire was imported from Italy from a long line of truffle hunting dogs. He is undemanding, calm, friendly, smart, independent and focused.

The Labragotto is a breed that takes all the best qualities of these breeds and combines them, making wonderful family dogs that anyone can welcome into their home and love.
