New Puppy Questions

As a new puppy owner, you’re probably bursting with questions, and that’s perfectly normal! We usually start hearing from excited new puppy parents about two weeks before their little ones go home, through text messages and phone calls. To help you out, we’ve put together some of the most common questions we get and our answers. We hope this guide helps you prepare for your new puppy and serves as a handy reference once your puppy is home with you.

What are your favorite toys to give puppies?

For toys I like to get an assortment or textures but nothing that can unravel easily. Here are a few that I recommend: Chew Toys Puzzle Toy Treat Toys

I also like to rotate the toys that they have access to every few days, so they don’t get bored.

What kind of treats are best for puppies?

We get asked this a lot, and there are several answers. Here is the main thing we look for in a treat: the ingredient list. If it’s too long or has too many additives in it, then it’s probably not good for your puppy. We use freeze-dried liver or freeze dried lung treats for our dogs and puppies.

What grooming items are needed for our puppy?

There are some great finger brushes which would be a good option for cleaning their teeth (and handling puppy breath).

I like Pupwells products. They are specially made for doodle coats. They also has some great education on there and I think it comes free if you buy some of her products. There is a great nail care kit on there too. I totally understand if they are too expensive so you can get a slicker brush and nail dremel on Amazon.

While your puppy is growing, their nails are so small I just use human nail clippers once a week.

I’ve found that and are some good options for this.

What kind of schedule should I have my puppy on?

We encourage our clients to use the Empowered Puppy schedule and adapt it to fit around your schedule. This book was written by one of our main mentors and we highly recommend it for every puppy and dog owner.

How often should I bathe my puppy?

I don’t bathe very often with shampoo as you don’t want to strip their natural oils. I usually bath with shampoo when they start to smell like a dog lol. Otherwise I recommend just rinsing them off if they get dirty.

What type of shampoo should I use for my puppy?

When they start to smell or if they roll in mud and need to be washed with shampoo, I like any gentle shampoo that is free of parabens and other junk. Here’s a good one:
